n-Butanol Market By Applications
N-Butanol is widely used as a chemical intermediate in the manufacturing of Butyl Acrylate, Butyl Acetate, Plasticizers, Glycol Ether, Solvents, and others. Butyl Acrylate is the largest application, accounting for more than 40% of global n-butanol demand. It is primarily used in the Paints & Coatings and Adhesives industries, and is expected to remain a key market for n-butanol in most regions. The Glycol Ethers application is the second biggest consumer, accounting for more than 20% of global n-butanol demand. N-butanol is used to manufacture P-series ethers, which are used in the production of propylene glycol monobutyl ether (PnB), dipropylene glycol monobutyl ether (DPnB), and tripropylene glycol monobutyl ether (TPnB), used in Paints & Coatings, Adhesives, and Inks.
N-butanol can also serve as an alternative to ethanol for fuel applications, with a majority of n-butanol production expected to transition to the biomass fermentation method due to a shift away from hydrocarbon energy sources.

n-Butanol Market Forecast
The global n-Butanol demand was estimated to be over 5,300 kilo tons in 2022, which is further poised to grow at an annual average rate of 3%, primarily influenced by the growing demand for butyl acrylate. The global n-butanol demand is driven by the Asia Pacific region, where most of the new n-butanol capacities are expected to be added in the coming years. Developments in end-use industries such as Automotive and Construction will positively impact the n-butanol market in the forecast period
n-Butanol Regional Markets
Asia Pacific
Asia Pacific is the largest market for n-Butanol, with a market share of more than 50%, owing to the strong presence of end-use industries, rapid industrialization, urbanization and shift of manufacturing bases from mature markets to emerging economies such as China, India, and other Southeast Asian countries.

North America and Western Europe
North America and Western Europe account for market shares of 25% and 20%, respectively. North America, particularly the United States, is a significant consumer of n-butanol, driven by its extensive use in the automotive, construction, and chemical industries. The automotive sector relies on n-butanol for brake fluid production, while the construction industry uses it in paints, coatings, and adhesives. Additionally, the chemical industry in North America utilizes n-butanol as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of various compounds.
Middle East & Africa
Middle East & Africa is one of the emerging players in the n-Butanol market. Saudi Butanol Co (SABUCO) is the sole n-butanol producer, with an installed capacity of 330 kilo tons.
n-Butanol Trade Analysis
China
China is the largest importer of n-butanol, with average imports of 220 kilo tons between 2016 and 2022 at an average price of $961 per metric ton. However, in recent years, China s n-butanol imports have declined. The nation has also implemented strategies aimed at further reducing its imports in the mid-term outlook, with expectations of transitioning into a net exporter in the long-term forecast.
South Africa
South Africa is the largest exporter of n-butanol, with average export volumes of more than 120 kilo tons per year between 2016 and 2021. In 2021, n-butanol exports saw a decline of -33% compared to the previous year due to raw material shortages and the impact of COVID-19.
n-Butanol Manufacturers
BASF, Dow, OXEA, Sasol, PetroChina, LG Chem, Grupa Azoty, Evonik, Eastman Chemical Company, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, Sinopec, and KH Neochem are global manufacturers of n-butanol. BASF is the largest manufacturer of n-butanol, with a capacity of 450 kilo tons and a market share of 14%, followed by Dow, Oxea, and Luxi Chemical Company with market shares of 11%, 9%, and 7%, respectively.
