The plastic production has continued to grow at an annual average rate of 4% over the last five years, and it is further projected to grow in the coming years. As of 2021, more than 390 million tons of plastic was produced globally, with Asia accounting for 51% of total production followed by North America. In the last few decades, the production of plastics products and electrical and electronic equipment has grown significantly owing to the developments in new technologies innovation and applications development. Various countries are taking initiatives to tackle plastic waste production through various initiatives and regulations. The United States targets to increase its recycle rate to 50% by 2030. Similar targets are being set by all major consumer countries of plastics products.

ABS has an advantage as it can be melted and reshaped again and again without any major chemical degradation and hence can be recycled completely. Recycled ABS has comparable properties to that of virgin ABS with a carbon footprint up to 80% lower than that of virgin ABS. Recycled ABS (rABS) can replace the virgin counterpart in almost all applications. Increasing concerns over plastic waste and environmental concerns such as global warming and health hazards have promoted the usage of recycled plastics over the year. Also, the recycled plastic market has a small dependence on the volatility of crude oil.

Plastic plays an important role in electronics industry as plastics do not conduct electricity, lightweight, durable, energy-efficient, recyclable and therefore plastic are used in variety of applications. Plastic has wide used in electrical and electronics industry on account of its excellent electrical properties. Miniaturization of electronic devices has been one of the major growth factors, encouraging the use of plastics in the electrical & electronics industry. Globally around 50,000 kilo tons of Waste Electrical & Electronics Equipment (WEEE) waste is generated with Asia, America and Europe contributing more than 40,000 kilo tons of WEEE. Asia accounts for more than 50% of WEEE generated followed by Europe and America. These three regions together recycled around 8,000 kilo tons of WEEE in 2019. Europe has highest WEEE recycling rate of around 42.5% while Asia and America recycling rate is in between 9%-12%. An increase in WEEE collection, recovery of plastics, recycling rate, consumer awareness about environmental pollution and implementation of legislative regulations in major electronics waste producing countries will drive the demand of Recycled ABS in long term forecast.
