Fluoropolymers are fluorocarbon-based polymer with carbon - fluorine bonds in it. Fluoropolymers are manufactured from alkenes in which one or more hydrogen atoms have been replaced by fluorine. Development of fluoropolymers began in 1938 by the discovery of PTFE. The first Melt Processible (FEP) was discovered in 1956 and commercialized in 1960 by DuPont. It is sold under brand name Teflon FEP. Some commonly used Melt Fluoropolymers are as follows.

PVDF: Polyvinylidene fluoride or polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) known by brand name (KynarTM) was discovered in the year 1948. It is used in applications where purity requirement is higher. PVDF is commonly used in chemical, semiconductor, medical and defense industries, and lithium-ion batteries. 

FEP: Fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) is a copolymer of hexafluoropropylene and tetrafluoroethylene. FEP was invented by DuPont, and it is known by brand name Teflon FEP. Other brand name for FEP are Neoflon FEP from Daikin and Dyneon FEP from Dyneon/3M. FEP is softer than PTFE and melts at 200 °C which gives advantage for molding but reduces thermal stability.

PFA: Perfluoroalkoxy alkanes (PFA) introduced in 1973, is a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoroethers. PFA has better non-stick properties and higher chemical resistance as compared to PTFE. PFA is known by trademark such as Teflon-PFA, Hostaflon-PFA and Chemfluor.

ETFE: ETFE known by its brand name (TefzelTM) has very low chemical resistance however it is hard, and it has good abrasion resistance. Traditionally ETFE was used in wire and cables but nowadays it is also used in bioprocessing.

THV: THV is a polymer consists of three different monomers: tetrafluoroethylene, hexafluoropropylene and vinylidene fluoride. THV is Melt-Processible with Melting points from 115 °C to 235 °C.

Melt Processable Fluoropolymers Capacity Overview

In 2022, global Melt Processable Fluoropolymers market capacity stood around 275 Kilo tons with PVDF, FEP, MFA/PFA together accounting major share.
