Changing Dynamics of Fluoropolymer Industry 2017-2025
USA accounted for over 20% of the global PTFE demand in 2012. In 2016, U.S consumption of PTFE reached 28 kilo tons. U.S fluoropolymers capacity utilization from 2000 to 2016 has averaged around 85%. Historically, the demand has grown at an average of around 2%. From 2012 to 2017, U.S consumption growth for PTFE has averaged about 2.1% per year on a volume basis. The country has been a net importer of PTFE in the last five years and Prismane Consulting estimates USA to remain a net importer in the long term forecast.
On the basis of demand break-up by form, PTFE is segmented as granular, fine powder and aqueous dispersion. In USA, granular PTFE is one of the largest product segments of with a market of over 44%. Granular resins are produced in the United States by Daikin Industries, Ltd. and The Chemours Company and are primarily used for molded shapes and mechanical parts. It is also used as a feed stock for filled compounds. Fine powder and micronized powder also hold significant share of global market. Fine powders and aqueous dispersion are made by emulsion polymerization. Around 40% of this goes into the electrical & electronics sector and is mainly consumed in the manufacture of sealing tape, tubing and wire insulation, among others.
