North America HDPE Market Overview
The total polyethylene demand in North America has been estimated to around 17124 kilo tons and has grown from 14754 kilo tons in 2010. Amongst the major type of polyethylene, HDPE accounts for a share of around 48.9% followed by LLDPE and LDPE and 35.2% and 15.7%, respectively. The average operating in the last 8 years in the country has averaged around 82%. In the forecast period operating rates are likely to slightly lower to 81% as a large number of capacities are added in the USA. In 2008 and 2009 the region was affected by the economic downturn, causing the demand to contract and only to recover in 2010. The regional polyethylene demand is anticipated to increase by a CAGR of 2.4% in the forecasted years till 2025.
In terms of HDPE demand by applications, blow molding application account for around 32.2% end-use application and this will continue to be largest end-use application during the forecast period till 2025. It is forecast to grow at an annual average of 2.6% per year. The second largest application is injection molding at 25.9% share followed by films at 19.6%, and pipe and conduit at 13.3%.
The North American region is expected to large exporter of HDPE at an increasing rate due to capacity additions in USA and increasing demand from Asian Countries like China. This will further be supported by speculated debottlenecks most likely expected to be carried out by major players.
