Maleic Anhydride Demand in Asia Pacific
Asia-pacific is one of the largest Maleic Anhydride producer in the world accounting for more than 75% of production capacity and 60% of the global demand. China is the biggest producer of maleic anhydride in Asia Pacific accounting for more than 70% of the regional maleic anhydride production. With the increasing demand for maleic anhydride from China and other Southeast Asian countries, the Maleic Anhydride market in Asia Pacific is poised to register a CAGR of 5.2% to cross 2,200 kilo tons by 2032 from the current demand of around 1,500 kilo tons. In the long-term forecast, the demand growth for maleic anhydride in the region is estimated to grow on account of increased growth from UPR and other derivatives like 1, 4 butanediol, lubricating oil additives, copolymers, maleic acid, fumaric acid, and agricultural chemicals. Furthermore, as most automotive, and other downstream derivative companies are shifting their base to Asian Countries like China, India, Vietnam, and other Southeast Asian Countries, regional maleic anhydride demand will also is estimated to exhibit strong growth in the coming year.

In 2022, Asia Pacific maleic anhydride capacity stood at 2,800 kilo tons, an increase of almost 450 kilo tons from 2016. In the long term forecast till 2032, an average 50 kilo tons of capacity addition is expected each year majorly in Southeast Asia countries. China is the largest market for maleic anhydride and has around 50 small scale and large-scale producers with a total production capacity of 2300 kilo tons as of 2022. Northeast Asia is the biggest maleic anhydride producer in Asia Pacific accounting for more than 90% of the regional capacity on the back of presence of major maleic anhydride producers in China and Taiwan. Chinese Maleic Anhydride market is experiencing oversupply situation and no further major expansions are estimated till 2025. However, operating rates are expected to rise from 50% in 2022 to 60% by 2032. Several capacity additions were observed in China from 2010 and it continued to expand till 2016 until the oversupply situation occurred in China coupled with lower demand from the export markets and strict government regulations to minimize pollution caused by industrial emissions in China.

Maleic Anhydride Demand By Application
Most of the demand for maleic anhydride in the region is from unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) with a share of more than 64% of the total regional maleic anhydride demand followed by 1, 4 butanediols with a 10% market share. The operating rate in the last 5 years in region has averaged around 50% owing to lower operating rates in China. Maleic Anhydride demand is expected to be strong especially in countries with large populations such as China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, and Vietnam. Further the increase in living standards and increasing purchasing power among consumers due to economic growth will keep the regional maleic anhydride demand high. Asia has historically witnessed healthy growth rates in demand mainly driven by the burgeoning economy of China, South Korea, and India. Maleic Anhydride demand in the region is projected strong growth owing to shift of automobile production away from the mature markets to the developing regions in Asia-Pacific.

Maleic Anhydride Demand by Country
In terms of Maleic Anhydride market by country, China dominates the regional market accounting for around 72% in 2022, which translates to around 1,050 kilo tons. The Maleic Anhydride market in China is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 5% in the forecast period to reach 1,650 kilo tons by 2032. Malaysia is the second biggest maleic anhydride market in Asia Pacific accounting for around 9% of the regional market. Japan and India together account for more than 16% of the regional maleic anhydride market. In the long term forecast, India is projected to register highest CAGR of 5.7% on the back of increasing demand of maleic anhydride from end use industries such as Construction, Automotive and others.
Maleic Anhydride Trade Overview
Asia-Pacific has been a net exporter of maleic anhydride between 2016-2021 and will continue to remain the net exporter of maleic anhydride in the long-term forecast. The region will continue to export an average of around 150 kilo tons annually in the forecast period. The utilization rates in the region averaged around 50% over last five years and in the long-term forecast the operating rates are expected to remain between 55-60%. China is one of the largest maleic anhydride exporter with an annual average exports volume of over 80 kilo tons. Exports of maleic anhydride in China has increased by 800% in 2022 in comparison to 2016 while China imports an average 1 kilo tons of maleic anhydride. Taiwan, Malaysia and South Korea are the other major exporter of maleic anhydride in the region.
India is one of the major maleic anhydride importer in Asia Pacific with imports volumes have consistently ranged between 40 to 75 kilo tons over the past five years. The maleic anhydride demand in India was estimated to be around 82 kilo tons in 2022 and it is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.7% during 2023-2032. IGPL (Formerly MPCL) is the sole maleic anhydride producer in India with installed capacity of 8 kilo tons, while the remainder of maleic anhydride is sourced through imports from neighboring countries

Maleic Anhydride Average Prices
In Asia-Pacific, China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Malaysia are major producers and exporters of maleic anhydride. In 2016, China exported around 20 kilo tons of maleic anhydride at an average price of $950 per ton. By 2022, maleic anhydride exports from China have increased eight folds owing to the increased domestic output. India, Turkey, UAE, Egypt, Brazil, Italy, and Germany are major importers of maleic anhydride from China. Among these countries, India is the largest trade partner with average imports of around 18 kilo tons between 2016-2021. Malaysia is the second major exporter of maleic anhydride with average exports of around 30 kilo tons between 2016-2021. India, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, and Turkey are major importers of maleic anhydride originating from Malaysia.
In 2022, average maleic anhydride prices per ton were around USD 1650 - USD1790 in Asia-Pacific, which is an increase of almost 70% compared to the previous year and 50% compared to 2019. One of the primary factors contributing to the increase in Maleic anhydride prices is the fluctuation in crude oil prices. The manufacturing process of maleic anhydride involves the oxidation of butane, which is a by-product of crude oil processing. Any fluctuations in crude oil prices can have a direct impact on the final cost of the product. Also, the production costs of the marginal producer are the drivers of market prices for most commodity chemicals. Changes in oil-price affect the marginal producers’ production economics and, therefore, commodity-chemical price levels. The COVID-19 pandemic is another factor that has resulted in an increase in maleic anhydride prices. The pandemic has disrupted global supply chains and caused a shortage of raw materials and shipping containers, resulting in higher transportation costs. This has led to an increase in the overall cost of production and transportation of maleic anhydride, which has been passed on to consumers through higher trade prices.
