Bioplastics in Flexible Packaging Market Analysis By Demand, By Region, By Applications and Forecast Report Till 2032

Bioplastics in Flexible Packaging Market Overview

Bioplastics are a type of plastic that are made from renewable materials, such as plant-based materials, instead of traditional petrochemicals. These materials can be used in a variety of applications, including flexible packaging. Flexible packaging refers to packaging materials that can be easily bent or shaped, such as pouches, bags, and films. Bioplastics can be used in the production of flexible packaging materials, offering a more sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic packaging.

In terms of type, the market is bifurcated into Bio-PE, PLA, PBS, PHA, Starch-based plastics, and PBAT. Polylactic Acid (PLA) is the largest type of bioplastic used in flexible packaging. It has been widely used in various applications including food packaging, such as coffee cups, food containers, and pouches. PLA has several advantages over traditional plastic packaging. It is made from renewable resources, biodegradable, and compostable, which makes it a more sustainable option. It also has good barrier properties and can be used in various packaging forms, such as films and bags.

Bioplastics in Flexible Packaging Demand Analysis

In terms of demand by application, the Food & Beverages industry dominates the market. Food & Beverages packaging is an important application for bioplastics because of the increasing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly packaging solutions. Bioplastics, such as PLA and PHA are biodegradable and compostable, making them a more sustainable alternative to traditional plastic packaging. They can be used for a wide range of food packaging applications, including snack packaging, coffee packaging, and fresh produce packaging.

Europe is the largest market for flexible packaging. The incline towards a sustainable society is intertwined with the European economy's production, use, and disposal of plastic. Europe is a central hub for the bioplastics industry and ranked foremost in the field of research and development, having this industry’s largest market worldwide. More than one-fourth of the bioplastics production capacity is located in Europe. Consumers in the region are becoming more aware of the effects of plastic and non-biodegradable packaging on the environment. The demand for green packaging, including bioplastic packaging, is increasing in the region. ?

Bioplastics in Flexible Packaging Manufacturers

Intraplás has collaborated with TotalEnergies to use their bio-based renewable polymer for packaging purposes for food-contact drop-in packaging solutions to reduce customers’ carbon footprint.

On March 9 2023, Sulapac launches a bio based alternative which has been designed to substituting hard plastics, including ABS to create an environmental friendly solution which will also provide a high-end luxury feel.

In January 2023, Dow announced that they are working with LVMH Beauty to implement bio-based plastics from recycled and bio-based feedstocks into several of their perfume and cosmetic product packaging.

Increasing demand for Sustainable Packaging

Bioplastics are considered more environmentally friendly than traditional plastics, which is a key factor driving their use in flexible packaging. There is increasing demand from consumers, regulators, and industry players for sustainable and eco-friendly packaging solutions, which is driving the adoption of bioplastics in flexible packaging.

Governments around the world are implementing regulations aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable packaging solutions. Many of these regulations require the use of bioplastics or other sustainable materials in packaging, which is driving the adoption of bioplastics in flexible packaging.

High Costs of Bioplastics

Bioplastics are often more expensive than traditional plastic materials, which can increase the cost of flexible packaging. This can be a significant barrier for companies that are looking to adopt bioplastics in their packaging.
