Bio Polyamide Market Overview

Bio-polyamides are bioplastics that are derived from natural fats and oils (renewable resources). PA 11 is based on undecylenic acid while all other bio-polyamides are based on sebacic acid. PA 6, 10 and PA 10-10 are based on sebacic acid and are produced through the step-growth polymerization of the diacid with a diamine such as hexamethylene-diamine (C6) and decamethylene-diamine (C10). To produce PA11, undecylenic acid is brominated followed by reaction with ammonia that yields 11-aminoundecanoic acid which is further polymerized to form PA11. In general, all the bio-polyamides have excellent mechanical properties including high tensile strength, flexibility, toughness and good resilience and abrasion resistance. The major end-use applications include Transportation, Electrical & Electronics, Industrial Coatings, Oil & Gas, Consumer Goods, Textiles and Others. In 2021, the global production capacity for bio-polyamides was around 200 kilo tons, and the utilization rates for bio-polyamides, excluding polyamide 56, exceeded 85%. The inclusion of polyamide 56 capacity in China resulted in a decline in the overall utilization rates for bio-polyamides. However, it is anticipated that the global capacity will reach approximately 300 kilo tons by 2032, with significant capacity expansions expected in Asia. Between 2020 and 2025, Asia is projected to add around 30 kilo tons of bio-polyamide capacity, with a further increase to 65 kilo tons by 2032, primarily in China and the ASEAN region. China s emphasis on sustainability is anticipated to drive growth in the bio-polyamide market and the broader market for bioplastics/biodegradable polymers.

Bio Polyamide Supply Overview

Arkema was one of the largest Bio-PA producers globally having a capacity of around 55 kilo tons in the U.S., France, and China until Kasai Bio started operations at its 100 kilo tons Polyamide 56 facility in China. The company is also setting up a Bio-PA facility in Singapore to capture the fast-growing ASEAN and APAC markets. DSM and Evonik also produce bio-based specialty polyamides. Arkema accounted for around 28%% of the global Bio-PA capacity and has been exporting to several countries from its facilities in Europe and the USA. The polyamide 66 demand-supply crunch led to the development of polyamide 56 which is predominantly used in textile applications. Around 30 kilo tons of Capacity is expected to be added in Asia alone between 2020 and 2025. With further increase in demand, Prismane Consulting further speculates capacities up to 70 kilo tons to be added by 2032, mostly in China and the ASEAN region. China’s shifting focus towards more sustainable products will provide a big push not only to the Bio-PA market but all the bioplastics / biodegradable polymers market.

Bio Polyamide Application Overview

Bio-Polyamides are used in manufacturing of various automotive parts such as tubing, break liners, fuel lines due to its superior properties such as heat resistance and high strength. Bio-PA are lightweight compared to metal and rubber hence it also reduces weight of the vehicles. Bio-based polyamide is also used in manufacturing lightweight parts of airplanes. Transportation application accounted for around 1/4th of Bio-Polyamide demand in 2021 and it is further expected to grow at a CAGR of 5%. Between 2022-2032. Bio-Polyamides such as PA-11 and PA-12 have superior properties than that of Nylon 6,6 or Nylon 6. Due to its higher heat resistance and strength, it is used in premium cars and airplanes for light weighting. PA 11 and 12 can replace metal and rubber parts in cars resulting in weight reduction. Bio-based PA 11 and PA12 have almost three times higher impact strength, 7 times higher tensile strength and 4 to 5 times higher impact notched toughness. The growth opportunities for Bio-PA in the automotive industry are primarily linked with the industry’s drive for lower emission and increased fuel efficiency. Bio-PA also provides the option of replacement of metals with plastics to reduce the weight of the vehicle, achieving fuel efficiency. Unexplored opportunities of replacing metals in automotive, aerospace, industrial applications as well as electrical and electronics and global tightening of environmental regulations for automobiles to improve fuel mileage, control emission and reduce fuel permeation is expected to to drive the Bio-PA market.

Bio Polyamide market in Asia Pacific

Asia-Pacific is the fastest growing consumer of Bio-PA accounting for over 50% of the global demand in 2021 and it is forecast to grow at 7.3% between 2022 and 2030 to cross 150 Kilo tons by 2032. As a result of the continued shift of electrical & electronic manufacturing and automobile production away from the mature markets to the developing regions in Asia-Pacific, Bio-PA demand in Asia-Pacific for electrical & electronics applications was estimated to be a around 5 kilo tons in 2021. In 2021, Electrical & Electronics accounted for almost 10% of regional demand. Textile was the largest application for Bio-PA in Asia Pacific region, mainly due to strong demand from China. Bio based PA-56 is majorly used in textile applications. Kasai Bio is the only producer of fully bio-based Polyamide 56 with an annual production capacity of 100 kilo tons.
