Blow Molding is the process of producing hollow plastic parts. Firstly, raw material is heated and melted to tubes called as parisons. The machine blows hot air across the heated plastic parison which is placed on top of the mold cavity, the air forces the heated plastic to get expand across the interior walls of the cavity. The blow-molded part is ejected after it is cooled off. Blow molding is used to make containers such as soda bottles, water cans, shampoo bottles, coolers, toys, trays, etc made up of PET, PE, PVC, Polystyrene, polycarbonates, etc. Blow molding containers are used in wide range of end-use applications such as food & beverages, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, personal care & homecare, and others.
Food & beverages are estimated to be the largest consumer of blow-molded containers globally in 2023 on the back of growing demand of packaged food and rising e-commerce. In 2023, around 600 Billion bottles were produced globally. The largest per capita consumer of bottled water globally is Singapore and Australia with 1,129 liters and 504 litres respectively. The global sales of bottled water were 380 Billion Litres in 2023 with a market value of USD 300 Billion.
The global sales of bottled water are estimated to nearly double by 2030. The market of bottled water has been rising immensely over the last few decades on the back of rising concern towards safe drinking water. Moreover, the growth of food & beverages industry globally on the back of the growing population is also driving the market. For example, China is the largest market of the food industry and total grain production in the country grew by 5% in 2023 from the revious year to reach around 683 Million Tons on the back of a growing population which has increased by 480,000 to reach around 1.4 Billion in 2023. The market of blow-molded containers in the personal care industry is driven by the growing consumption of cosmetics worldwide.
The market of blow molded containers is restrained by rising consumer awareness towards plastic pollution. The 600 Billion plastic bottles generated resulted in 25 Million Tons of plastic waste. Around 85% of the plastic bottles end up in landfills. Glass and ceramic bottles are used as an alternative to plastic bottles which also is a threat to blow molded containers. However, the shift towards sustainable materials such as recycled plastics will provide an opportunity for growth blow molded containers in the forecast period. Soft drinks bottles and water bottles are now mostly made of recycled PET. But more efforts are required to collect and recycle them.
