Global Diisononyl Phthalate (DINP) Market Demand & Forecast Analysis, 2016-2036

Diisononyl Phthalate Market Overview

DINP is a phthalate plasticizer widely used in various plastic items. It is colorless and odorless oily liquid. Although it has limited solubility in water, it can dissolve in alcohols, hexane, and other solvents. DINP is highly versatile and compatible with all monomeric plasticizers used in PVC compounding. The majority of DINP is used as a plasticizer in PVC industry, while other applications of it include, non-PVC polymers like rubbers, as well as non-polymer products such as anticorrosion paints, inks, anti-fouling paints, adhesives, coatings, and sealants.

DINP is considered as a primary plasticizer with medium molecular weight, offering low volatility and excellent permanence characteristics. Its primary application lies in vinylic compounds, including cables & wires, and plastisol’s. As the largest-volume general-purpose high-molecular-weight plasticizer for PVC, DINP offers cost savings and a well-balanced set of properties. It is commonly used as a substitute for Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DOP) in most flexible PVC applications.

Diisononyl Phthalate Market Dynamics

Driver: Shift from Phthalates to Non-Phthalates Plasticizers

The phase-out of classified phthalates has led to the substitution of DINP plasticizer, along with other plasticizers such as DIDP, DPHP, DINCH, and non-phthalates like DOTP. The demand for both DEHP and DINP has been increasing globally, but the introduction of DOTP, a non-phthalate plasticizer, has significantly expanded the market in recent years. While Japan has witnessed a shift from DEHP to DINP, the share of DEHP remains substantial compared to other countries due to factors like EU RoHS2 compliance.

Traditionally, the plasticizers market was dominated by phthalates, but their share has considerably decreased due to increasing health regulations. As a result, consumers are turning towards phthalate-free plasticizers, thereby driving the market for non-phthalate alternatives. The use of non-phthalates in various applications is further contributing to the growth of this market. Globally over 8,400 kilo tons of plasticizers are consumed annually, with European consumption exceedingly over 1,300 kilo tons. Phthalates are the most commonly used plasticizers due to their strong compatibility with PVC. The demand for non-phthalate alternatives is growing rapidly in Western Europe and North America, driven by pressure from retailers who advocate for phthalate-free electronic devices, wires, and cables.

The non-phthalate plasticizers market is primarily driven by Asia Pacific, with China leading the way, followed by countries like Japan, India, and ASEAN countries. The region s strong demand is propelled by growth in end-use industries and increasing populations. Western Europe and North America are also significant regions for the phthalates as well as non-phthalate plasticizers market, driven by rising awareness among consumers, regulatory scrutiny, and concerns regarding health and the environment. Pressure from retailers advocating for phthalate-free electronic gadgets, wires, and cables is further fuelling market growth of non-phthalates in these regions.

Key developments in the DINP plasticizer market :

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has outlined its intentions to designate diisononyl phthalate (DINP) as a toxic chemical. Numerous countries worldwide have already implemented regulations governing the use of phthalates in certain products. In the United States, both the Consumer Product Safety Commission and EU regulators restrict the phthalate content in items that may come into contact with the mouth, such as toys and childcare articles, to a maximum of 0.1% by weight. DINP is specifically listed on California s Proposition 65, which necessitates businesses to notify consumers about the presence of certain chemicals in their products. If the proposed federal rule is implemented, specific industry sectors that utilize significant amounts of DINP-category chemicals will be required to report this information to the Toxics Release.

Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical Company, Ltd., a Chinese company, has chosen Dow and Johnson Matthey s LP OxoSM Technology for the production of isononyl alcohol (INA) at its upcoming manufacturing facility. INA is commonly utilized in the manufacturing of plasticizers such as Diisononyl Phthalate (DINP), Diisononyl Adipate (DINA), and Triisononyl Trimellitate (TINTM). The new plant will be constructed within QXTD s integrated petrochemical complex in Zibo City, China, with an annual capacity of 200 kilo tons. It is anticipated to commence operations in 2023.

Zhuhai Shiyue New Material Co., Ltd. has recently announced its plans for the construction of a state-of-the-art production line dedicated to plasticizer manufacturing. This new facility will have an annual production capacity of 95 kilo tons. Within this capacity, 45 kilo tons will be dedicated to the production of DOTP, while the remaining 50 kilo tons will encompass a range of other plasticizers, including TOTM, DPHA, DOA, DINP, and DPHP.
