DMT Market Size

The global DMT market size was valued at USD 911.5 million in 2022. It is poised to reach USD 1.29 billion by 2032, registering a CAGR of 3.5%. Dimethyl Terephthalate (DMT) is an odourless, white solid or heated colourless liquid. It is a diester produced from the reaction of p-xylene, methanol, and air in the presence of a catalyst. It is represented by the chemical formula C6H4(COOCH3)2 or C10H10O4. DMT is primarily used in the manufacturing of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer melts, which is used in the production of polyester resins & fibres and industrial plastics. It is also combined with butanediol to produce polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), which is processed further to produce staple fibres, films, foils, and continuous filaments. DMT is used to improve and modify polymer materials, and it also acts as a building block in the manufacturing of video & X-ray films and thermoplastics.

DMT Market Overview

The DMT market is segmented by application into Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Polytrimethylene Terephthalate (PTT), Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT), and Others. PET production is the largest application of DMT globally, widely used in the production of polyester fibers, films, and resins. PBT production is another notable application, while PTT production is comparatively less common. 

DMT was widely used traditionally as a PET raw material. However, purified terephthalic acid (PTA) eventually became the raw material choice for manufacturing PET and PBT, since production with DMT is more expensive than with PTA. DMT market thus continues to shrink as cost efficiencies have driven majority of the polyester production to PTA. Further, some applications that still use DMT continue to look for alternatives. However, since majority of the industry has already shifted to PTA, DMT market is expected to register marginal decline during the forecast.

Fewer DMT manufacturers operate globally, retaining their DMT processing systems for external supply. DMT market has seen several shutdowns in the past decade. More recently, EU’s sole DMT producer Oxxynova ceased operations at its 240 kilo tons/year plant at Luelsdorf, Germany, in December 2022. Turkey is now the sole DMT producer in Europe, run by SASA Polyester Sanayi at Adana.

DMT market is more prevalent in Western Europe and North America, while countries in the Asia Pacific are estimated to be consuming less DMT, mainly owing to high demand for TPA in the region.

DMT Market Dynamics

With rising demand for PET in end-use industries like construction, packaging, and electronics, DMT market in PET production is poised to continue growing during the forecast period. In addition, increasing per-capita consumption and population growth for polyester fibres will further drive DMT market. Increasing demand for both PET and PBT is thus expected to drive the DMT market in the forthcoming years. 
DMT is made from paraxylene, which is a derivative of Naphtha. Fluctuations in crude prices will thus have an immediate impact on paraxylene prices, which will in turn affect DMT market. Volatility in raw material prices is thus a restraining factor for DMT market.

Given the current focus on circular economy approach being implemented by numerous manufacturers, the development of biobased DMT poses a major opportunity for the growth of DMT market during the forecast.
