Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) is used as oxygenate in engines to raise the octane number by raising the oxygen content of gasoline. It is manufactured by the chemical reaction of methanol and isobutyl. Asia-Pacific is the key region in MTBE market due to rapid economic expansion and increase in foreign direct investments. The region accounts for more than half of the global MTBE demand as China alone is the largest consumer of MTBE and it also has the highest production capacity globally. 

Applications of MTBE

Use of MTBE as oxygenate is more in developing and emerging countries as other oxygenates such as ethanol and ETBE are more costly. Applications of MTBE include its use as anti-knocking agent, as a solvent, in medical intermediates and in high purity isobutene.
