PI Advanced Materials formerly known as SKC Kolon PI, is one of the leading Polyimide Films producers with installed capacity of more than 4500 tons in 2021. The company is further planning to add 750 tons of capacity by first half of 2022 and another 750 tons of capacity by end of 2023. This will bring the total PI films capacity to 6000 tons by the end of 2023. The new PI films line will be used to manufacture general and optical use films. Kaneka is the second biggest PI film producer with production facility in Japan, USA and Malaysia. The company markets its PI Films under the brand name Apical™ and Pixeo.Dupont is one of the largest polyimide films manufacture in the North America with production facility in Circleville, Ohio. In early 2022, Dupont completed expansion capacity for Kapton PI film and Pyralux flexible circuit materials with investment of around $250 million to meet the growing demand.

The global PI Films & Tapes market is segmented into three types namely Polyimide Tapes, Conventional Polyimide Films and Colorless Polyimide Films. Conventional polyimide films are utilized in flexible circuit boards, display panels, rail transit, insulating materials, and the aerospace industry. In 2021, Kolon Industries announced that the company has supplied flexible and transparent Polyimide Films for the cover window of Xiaomi’s first foldable smartphone, Mi MIX FOLD.

Samsung Display is considering using a colorless polyimide substrate for their foldable OLED panels because it will help in increasing the light penetration and improve the quality of pictures in the camera.

Kolon and SKC will supply PI films that will be used as cover windows protective films for the ASUS Zenbook 17 fold OLED. The foldable OLED panel will be made by Chinese display producer BOE. Kolon and SKC will supply PI films to BOE which will start manufacturing the panels by Q2 2022.

LG Display has entered into an agreement with SK IE Technology to procure transparent PI films. These films will be utilized by LG Display in the production of OLED panels that are intended to be supplied to Hewlett Packard for the purpose of manufacturing foldable notebooks.
