Global Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) Market Demand & Forecast Analysis, 2016-2036

Polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE is a synthetic, high molecular weight, thermoplastic fluoropolymer made up of carbon and fluorine atoms. Due to the strong Carbon-Fluorine bonds, the polymer is non-reactive and is hydrophobic in nature. It has a very low coefficient of friction, ranging from 0.05 to 0.1, and has good wear resistance, and chemical stability. PTFE is commonly known by the brand name Teflon, was discovered in 1938 and trademarked by DuPont, currently under The Chemours Company, a spin off from DuPont. Teflon is commonly used as an inner coating material for non-stick pans and other kitchenware. The fluoropolymer market is divided into two types, PTFE, and other Melt-processible Fluoropolymers (PVDF, FEP, E-CTFE, ETFE, PFA, CTFE-VDF, PCTFE, THV and amorphous types).
Global PTFE Demand Supply Analysis 2016-2032 (Tons)
Global PTFE Demand Supply Analysis 2016-2032 (Tons)
In 2022, the global PTFE demand was estimated to be more than 190,000 tons accounting for more than 50% of the global fluoropolymer demand. The PTFE market was affected owing to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, contracting by around 7% in 2020, however the demand recovered steadily with daily operations coming back on track. PTFE holds a dominant position among fluoropolymers. However, Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) is projected to surpass PTFE in terms of demand in the long-term forecast, driven by the increasing requirements from chemical processing, industrial applications, and home appliances. The global PTFE market is estimated to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 4.7% from 2023 to 2032. PVDF, the second-largest fluoropolymer, holds a market share of 15-17%, while Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP) accounts for approximately 9-12% of the total demand. Asia Pacific has emerged as the dominant region in the global PTFE market, primarily due to the robust presence of industrial and chemical processing industries in countries such as China, India, and the ASEAN nations. The strong industrial infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities in these countries have propelled the growth of the PTFE market, solidifying the region s position as a key player in the global landscape.

PTFE is sold in forms such as Granules, Fine Powder Aqueous Dispersion and Micronized. In terms of PTFE market by form type, Granular PTFE dominates the global market, accounting for more than 55% of PTFE market owing to its outstanding chemical resistance, high temperature resistance, low-temperature toughness, excellent water repellant, adhesion and electrical properties. Also, Granular PTFE is easier to use, involves low manufacturing cost and it is available at low price.
Global PTFE Demand Analysis, By Region - 2022 (Tons)
Global PTFE Demand Analysis, By Region - 2021 (Tons)
China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of PTFE accounting for more than 50% of global PTFE capacity and more than 40% of global PTFE demand in 2022. The USA, Japan, China, and Western Europe together accounts for more than 75% of the global PTFE market. In Asia Pacific, Japan is the second largest PTFE market followed by India, accounting for more than 7% of total PTFE demand in the region. India is a net exporter of PTFE resins with an average export volumes of over 11,000 tons in last five years. Most of the exports are destined to the United States, Germany, and Italy. India has also imported on an average 3000 tons of PTFE resins between 2016-2021 mostly from China, United States, the Netherlands, Russia, and South Korea. Gujarat Fluorochemicals Ltd is the biggest PTFE producer in India and 4th largest PTFE producer in the world. The company operates a 21,000 tons of PTFE plant in Dahej, Gujarat. GFL is further planning to increase PTFE production capacity by 3000 tons with a planned CAPEX of more than Rs 2.5 billion to cater to the growing demand for PTFE in the domestic and international market. A decade ago, the company started production initially with 2- 3 PTFE grades, and now scaled to around 50 grades. Shri Ram Fibres Limited (SRF) is in the process of commencing operations of its 5000 tons PTFE plant in next few months. The plant will focus on minimizing PTFE imports in India.
Global PTFE Demand Analysis, By Application - 2016-2032 (Tons)
Global PTFE Demand Analysis, By Application - 2016-2032 (Tons)
Germany is the largest PTFE market in Western Europe accounting for around over 35% of the PTFE demand in the region owing to its vast automotive, electrical & electronics, chemical processing, and other industrial & manufacturing sector. The PTFE market in Germany is driven by its wide range of application in fast growing industries like automotive, electronics chemicals, construction and defence. In terms of PTFE application, around 40% of PTFE is utilized in the chemical processing industry, 15% in mechanical industries, and 13% in automotive market. PTFE demand in Germany was estimated to be more than 11,500 tons in 2022 which is met by Dyneon, the only player in Germany with capacity of 15,000 tons. The PTFE demand in the country is anticipated to cross 15,000 tons growing at CAGR of 1.7% between 2023-2032. Major PTFE producers in Western Europe are 3M (Dyneon), Asahi Glass company, Chemours and Solvay with total capacity of more than 34,000 tons in 2021. In the short term forecast per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) based are witnessing rise in restriction which will further impact the growth of PTFE market. The PTFE producers around the world have already faced massive penalties in last few years. The rise in restriction has resulted in announcement for closure of fluoropolymers business of major companies such as Dyneon (3M) and Solvay in Western Europe.

Recent Developments in PTFE market
Solvay, world leader in the fluorinated products, is planning to phase out use of PFAS (that are used as an additive in fluoropolymers) by 2026 globally. The company will expand its flurosurfactant free technology. The company has announced its plan to eliminate the use of fluorosurfactants globally, stating that it will manufacture almost 100% of its fluoropolymers at its Spinetta Marengo plant without the use of fluorosurfactants by 2026. The company has announced to cease the production of its fluoropolymer product lines - Hyflon® and Algoflon® PTFE, produced by using fluorosurfactants, at the facility in Spinetta Marengo, Italy. By June 30, 2023, the Hyflon® and Algoflon® PTFE product families will no longer be sold. The decision will not have any impact on Algoflon® products manufactured without the use of fluorosurfactants in Spinetta Marengo.

3M has announced to end the production of PFAS and stop using this in its products by 2026 due to increasing regulatory and financial pressures. The company will cease production of all PFAS-based additives, fluorinated fluids, fluoropolymers including PTFE, PVDF and fluoorelastomers. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) used in the production of PTFE causes serious health issues like kidney & testicular cancer, thyroid disease, high cholesterol, and pregnancy-induced hypertension.

Gujarat Fluorochemical, fourth largest PTFE producer in the world has announced that is has developed non-fluorinated polymerization aid (NFPA) technology to produce PTFE and PFA. The company is planning to start commercial production of PTFE and PFA using NFPA technology by 2023. Furthermore, the company is planning to switch from the use of fluorinated polymerization aids to non-fluorinated polymerization aids in fluoropolymers segment in phased manner. After this transition, the company will be able to produce PTFE, PVDF, PFA and FKM without using fluorinated polymerization aids.
