Global Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) Demand-Supply Analysis, 2018-2034

PVDF Market Overview

The global PVDF market was valued at ~USD 3 billion in 2023 and is anticipated to grow at an annual average growth rate of 9%, to cross USD 4 billion by 2034. PVDF is a highly durable thermoplastic polymer that offers excellent resistance to chemicals, UV radiation, and high temperatures. This versatile material is widely used in various industries for different applications. In the chemical industry, PVDF is commonly used for producing pipes, valves, and fittings that can handle aggressive chemicals. In the electrical industry, it serves as an insulation material and wire coating. In construction, PVDF is used for exterior coatings and membranes for roofing and waterproofing purposes. Additionally, PVDF is increasingly used in Lithium-ion battery-Ion batteries, as it offers high electrode adhesion, voltage stability, dimensional stability, controlled crystallinity, and lower electrode resistivity. It is a prominent material due to its versatility and exceptional properties. In the battery industry, PVDF is selected as a binder and separator coating resin based on its ability to perform exceptionally well under extreme conditions and its assurance of a reliable global supply.

Global PVDF Demand Supply Analysis, 2018-2034 (kilo tons)

Global PVDF Demand Supply Analysis, 2018-2034 (kilo tons)
Source: Secondary & Primary Research and Prismane Consulting estimates
Global demand of fluoropolymers was estimated to be over 500 kilo tons in 2023. PTFE was the most important fluoropolymer in the year 2023 with overall consumption accounting for around 45% of global fluoropolymer market. PTFE is likely to continue to be the dominant fluoropolymer in the long-term forecast on account of demand from Chemical processing/ Industrial and home appliances where it used as a coating to provide non-stick surfaces for cookware and also on steam irons and other tools. Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) is the second largest fluoropolymer accounting for over 20% market share; while Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP) accounts for around 12% of the total fluoropolymer demand.

PVDF Supply Overview

The global PVDF capacity was estimated to be over 210 kilo tons in 2023 and it is estimated to cross 360 kilo tons by 2034, growing at an annual average rate of around 5%. Arkema, Solvay, Daikin, Kureha Chemical, Inner Mongolia Wanhao Fluoro Chemical Co., Ltd,  and Gujarat Fluorochemicals Limited (GFL) are some the leading PVDF manufacturers in the world. Asia-Pacific is the largest producer and consumer of PVDF owing to the strong demand from applications like Paints & Coatings, Lithium-ion batteries, Membrane, etc. The region accounted for around 70% of the global PVDF capacities in 2023. Western Europe is the second largest manufacturer of PVDF accounting for 14% of the total capacities, which is estimated to be 33.2 kilo tons in 2023.

Arkema is the largest manufacturer of PVDF in China with production capacity of 35.7 kilo tons, followed by Inner Mongolia Wanhao Fluoro Chemical with installed capacity of 20 kilo tons. Syensqo (previously Solvay) and Zhejiang Juhua Co. Ltd., Kureha, etc. also have manufacturing units in China with installed capacity of 12 kilo tons, 10 kilo tons and 5 kilo tons respectively. Japan is the second biggest PVDF manufacturer in the Asia-Pacific region with Kureha Chemical Industry Co. Ltd. being the largest producer of PVDF in Japan with a production capacity of 6 kilo tons.

The growing popularity of electric vehicles and their reliance on lithium-ion batteries have led to an increase in demand for PVDF, a key material used in battery production. To meet this demand and maintain their market share, companies like Arkema and Solvay are expanding their PVDF production capacity in France and China. The PVDF market is anticipated to witness a healthy growth rate in the forecast owing to positive growth from its application.

PVDF Demand Overview

Asia Pacific is the largest consumer of PVDF with a market share of 70%. China is the major consumer and producer of PVDF accounting for around 57% of global PVDF consumption. Asian region is likely to witness most capacity addition where we envisage almost all capacity additions in China. Similarly, no additional capacity in Western Europe is expected during the forecast period. Increasing demand for PVDF from Paints & Coatings, Lithium-ion battery, Membrane and Wire, Cables and Lithium-ion battery are some of the key drivers for the global PVDF market. About 1/3rd of demand was accounted by the coatings applications. It is anticipated to remain the largest application for PVDF globally short term forecast, post which Lithium-ion batteries will account for the largest share, with a growth rate of around 18.7 % in the long-term forecast between 2024 and 2034. The Paints & Coatings application is the largest consumer of PVDF due to its desired properties like outstanding resistance to UV radiation, weathering, and pollutants, guarantee prolonged color retention and durability. PVDF is commonly used as insulation on electrical cables. Its application as an insulating material in batteries, including Lithium-ion battery-ion batteries, has also grown.

At a global level, PVDF market has witnessed significant changes. With emergence of new regions and the increase in exports, the new regions are playing key roles. The traditionally dominant markets are experiencing slow growth in terms of both demand and production. Countries like China are expected to drive the regional as well as global PVDF market.

Recent Developments in PVDF Market

In February 2025, Arkema a leading PVDF producer announced to expand PVDF capacity at it facility in the USA by 15% with focus to develop advanced grade of PVDF that will enhance the production of EVs and EV infrastructure, offering better sustainability. This expansion will also support in the growth of local manufacturing for customers in other key markets. The capacity expansion is scheduled to be completed by  the first half of 2026, to support growing PVDF demand from lithium-ion batteries, semiconductor and cable market in the region.

In July 2021, Kureha announced its plans to expand PVDF production at its Changshu plant to cater to the growing demand for PVDF binders in the automotive lithium-ion battery market. However, due to shifts in China's environmental policies and the implementation of the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, the business environment for lithium batteries has evolved, the company has announced the decision to cancel the PVDF production capacity expansion project.

Solvay and Orbia made a significant announcement in November 2023 regarding the establishment of a Joint Venture in North America aimed at supplying crucial materials to the battery market. This collaboration is set to establish the largest PVDF production facility for battery materials in the region, with an estimated total investment of around $850 million. Notably, a portion of this investment will be supported by a grant of $178 million awarded to Solvay by the US Department of Energy. The construction of the PVDF facility is expected to commence by the end of 2023, with a PVDF capacity of 20 kilo tons estimated to commence operation by mid-2026.

Arkema has announced plans to boost its production capacity of PVDF at its Pierre-Bénite, France by 50%, which is projected to be operational in Q1-2023. The company had previously expanded its PVDF facility in Changshu, China by 50% in November 2020. However, due to an increased demand for Lithium ion batteries, Arkema has revised its earlier announced capacity expansion of 35% to 50%. The company anticipates commencing commercial production in Q1-2023.

In Q2-2022, Solvay increased its PVDF production capacity by 50% at its Changshu site in China. The company has also revealed its plans to invest more than USD 340 Million (Euro 300 million) to expand its Tavaux site in France, aiming to achieve a production capacity of 35 kilotons by the end of 2023, which will make Solvay the largest PVDF producer in Europe.

Gujarat Fluorochemicals intends to expand its integrated PTFE and PVDF capacities at Dahej, India. The expansion plan includes operationalizing additional emulsion PTFE capacity by 2023 and expanding battery grade PVDF capacity by 10 kilo tons within the next 2-3 years.
