Ethanolamines Market Analysis By Demand, By Region, By Applications and Forecast Report Till 2032

Ethanolamines Market Overview

Ethanolamines is a colorless, organic chemical compounds that includes monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, and triethanolamine. It is manufactured by the synthesis reaction of an amine with ethylene oxide (EO). Ethanolamines are used in variety of end use industries, including personal care, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, construction, etc. The global ethanolamines market is expected to continue to grow in the coming years owing to increasing demand for various applications.

In terms of ethanolamines demand by type, Triethanolamine (TEA) dominates the market on the back of increasing demand for TEA from the personal care industry, as TEA provides more benefits as compared to Monoethanolamine (MEA) and Diethanolamine (DEA). TEA helps in stabilizing the emulsion which will make the product last longer, and help thicken the formula. It is used in the manufacture of cleansers, lotions, sunscreens, shaving gels, creams, etc. All these factors are helping to boost the ethanolamines demand in the forecast period.

Key Ethanolamine Producers

BASF and DOW are the largest ethanolamine producer in world together accounting for more than 25% of the global installed capacity. In terms of ethanolamines capacity, Northeast Asia is the largest producer with an installed capacity of more than 900 thousand tons followed by North America and Western Europe. Dow is the leading ethanolamine producer in North America accounting for more than almost 45% of the regional capacity followed by Indorama and INEOS at 23% each.

As of 2021, Northeast Asia, North America, and Western Europe are the major producers and consumers of Ethanolamines together accounting for more than 65% of the global demand. Asia Pacific dominates the ethanolamines market, with majority of demand coming from China followed by North America and Western Europe. China is the largest market for ethanolamines on the back of the presence of strong personal care and agricultural industries.

Global Ethanolamines Capacity, By Company - 2023(thousand Tons)

ethanolamine capacity by company
In terms of ethanolamines demand by type, Triethanolamine (TEA) stands out as the market leader due to the rising demand for TEA in the personal care industry. TEA offers several advantages when compared to Monoethanolamine (MEA) and Diethanolamine (DEA). For instance, TEA helps stabilize emulsions and lengthen the product's lifespan, thickens formulas, and is utilized in the production of various personal care products such as cleansers, lotions, sunscreens, shaving gels, creams, and more. All these factors collectively contribute to the growth of ethanolamines demand in the forecast period.

In terms of demand by application, the surfactants segment holds the largest share in the ethanolamines market owing to the increasing awareness of personal grooming products. Ethanolamines are widely used in the manufacture of surfactants and have properties for stabilizing formulations and emulsions, therefore they play a major part in the production of personal care products.  MEA and DEA are commonly used in cleaning products like tiles and floor cleaners, and laundry detergents. They are also used in removing dirt from engines. Ethanolamines are used in the production of herbicides and pesticides. It helps in increasing the pesticide’s ability to dissolve in water. DEA is a common raw material used in the manufacture of glyphosate which produces high quality herbicides. The increasing awareness of farmers towards the benefits of using herbicides is expected to boost the ethanolamines demand in the upcoming years.

Asia-Pacific is the fastest-growing consumer of ethanolamines, accounting for over 50% of the global demand. It is forecast to register a growth of 4% between 2022 and 2032 to cross 1100 thousand tons by 2032. As a result of the continued shift of electronic, automotive, and other industrial production away from mature markets towards the developing countries in Asia-Pacific, the demand for ethanolamines in Asia-Pacific was estimated to be around 800 thousand tons in 2021.

The rise in demand for personal care and cosmetics products will further drive the Ethanolamine market.

Ethanolamines, particularly triethanolamine (TEA), are commonly used in the formulation of cosmetics and personal care products, such as moisturizing creams and lotions, lipsticks, bar soaps, shampoos, and perfumes due to their pH-adjusting and emulsifying properties. The global cosmetics and personal care industry has experienced exponential growth in recent years, driven by factors such as growing awareness, increasing urbanization, and rising disposable income. The COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated the growth of the personal care industry. Due to the pandemic, there has been a heightened emphasis on the importance of personal hygiene and cleanliness, with people becoming more conscious of the need to maintain good personal hygiene.

This has led to a higher demand for cosmetics and personal care products, including those that contain ethanolamines, as consumers seek to maintain good hygiene practices. Moreover, the increasing global population and disposable income are expected to further drive the demand for ethanolamines in cosmetics and personal care products. Consumers around the world are becoming more aware of the importance of using environmentally friendly and sustainable products, which is also expected to drive the demand for bio-based ethanolamines in the cosmetics and personal care industry.

Asia Pacific dominates the ethanolamines market, with majority of demand coming from China followed by North America and Western Europe. China is the largest market for ethanolamines because of the presence of strong personal care and agricultural industries.

Rise in demand from the personal care industry

The Personal Care industry is no more limited to females, as the male population have also started to accept and use grooming practices to look handsome and stylish. Beauty products are no longer restricted to being used on special occasions, as people need to keep and maintain glowing skin.

Ethanolamines are commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products such as moisturizing creams and lotions, lipsticks, bar soaps, shampoos, and perfumes since they give integral fresh odor along with providing properties for stabilizing formulations and emulsions. They help remove oil and dirt on the skin by dissolving the grease and blending the other important ingredients together. MEA helps in adjusting the pH of a product to keep it from degrading when stored in a container so it will last longer. Hence, the increasing awareness of cosmetics and personal care products will boost the ethanolamines demand in the forecast period.

Increase in the demand for pesticides

Ethanolamines are used in the manufacture of herbicides and pesticides.
