Global Green Hydrogen Market Demand & Forecast Analysis, 2016-2050

Hydrogen is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic, highly combustible gas. It is one of the most abundantly found elements on earth, mostly available in the form of hydrocarbons and water. At normal atmospheric conditions, two hydrogen atoms combine to form hydrogen gas (H2). In the race to reduce CO2 emissions and achieving carbon neutral economy, hydrogen has a huge potential to replace crude oil economy with hydrogen economy. With the members of the EU signing the Conference of the Parties (COP21) Paris agreement in 2015 to aim at keeping the global warming between 1.5°C to 2°C, this will require the 28 countries to decarbonise their energy system. To achieve this goal, the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates the energy related CO2 emissions to be less than 770 megatons (Mt) per year by 2050. Along with this, the 2018 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emphasizes on the keeping the global warming below 1.5°C to avoid the rising sea levels, extreme temperatures & biodiversity losses, thus requiring the emissions to drop 45% till 2030 and to net zero till 2050.

Growing environmental concerns for less hazardous and clean energy is the major driver for the Green Hydrogen market. Green Hydrogen is estimated to replace the existing dependence on fossil fuels, and nuclear power etc. for energy requirement, and as a fuel in transportation industry in the long term forecast. Developments in fuel cell technology, growing concerns about climate change and drive towards clean energy have significantly accelerated adoption of Green Hydrogen in the transportation, power generation, ammonia, and other applications. Various countries have announced targets for reducing carbon emissions which would drive demand of green hydrogen in energy and transportation applications. In 2020, 20-25 kilo tons of hydrogen was consumed in transportation applications which accounts for around 0.02% of the global market. By 2050, owing to carbon neutrality ambitions of the Governments, Green Hydrogen demand is projected to increase in carbon intensive applications such as power generation, transportation, ammonia.
 
In terms of new projects, Western Europe, Asia-Pacific hold a significant share which is followed by North America, Central & South America, and others. Major upcoming green hydrogen projects such as Hydeal Ambition (~3600 Kilo Tons), Reckaz (~3000 Kilo Tons), Western Green Energy Hub, Aman etc.  At a regional level, Linde plc (Ireland), Air Liquide (France), Green Hydrogen Systems (Denmark) and others are the leading players in the Green Hydrogen market.
