Potassium chloride (KCl) is a chemical compound consisting of potassium and chlorine ions. Potassium chloride dominates the global agricultural potassium utilization, accounting for the majority of it. It comprises 96% of the world's potash production, with the remaining being made up of potassium sulfate (K2SO4), potassium-magnesium salts and potassium nitrate (KNO3)
The potassium chloride market is segmented by application into fertilizers, industrial chemicals, salt substitute & de-icing, dyes & pigments, metallurgy, and others. Fertilizer application dominates the total potassium chloride market. Potassium chloride is widely used in the agricultural industry owing to its relatively low cost and due to higher concentrations of potassium than other sources. The global potassium chloride market is driven by the high demand for food grains induced by a growing population. For instance, the global population grew by over 1% in 2021, putting pressure on agricultural productivity. The global population is estimated to reach 9 billion by 2037, increasing the scope for future consumption of potassium chloride.
In agriculture, potassium chloride is a fundamental component of many fertilizers, playing a critical role in enhancing crop yield, improving fruit quality, and promoting plant growth. The chemical industry utilizes it as a source of potassium in the production of various chemicals and in synthesis processes. Additionally, the food industry frequently employs potassium chloride as a salt substitute, particularly in low-sodium or "lite" food products, allowing consumers to reduce their sodium intake without sacrificing taste. Non-agricultural applications of potassium chloride are as a substitute for sodium chloride for people on a diet, as a de-icing agent, as water softeners, in dyes and pigments, metallurgy, industrial chemicals, and others.
Brazil, the USA, China, and Indonesia are the major importers of Potassium Chloride together importing around 28,000 thousand tons of Potassium Chloride in 2022. China is the major importer of Potassium Chloride and imported around 11,806 thousand tons of Potassium Chloride in 2022 which rose by an annual average rate of 55% from 2021. Major sources of shipments to China were from Belarus, Canada, and Russia.
In 2021, the European Union imposed sanctions on the importation of potassium chloride from Belarus. Shortly thereafter, the United States imposed sanctions on Belaruskali, a Belarusian potassium chloride producer. Furthermore, in 2022, Russia's invasion of Ukraine resulted in a ban on imports of potassium chloride from Russia. These collective actions led to a shortage in the supply of potassium chloride in 2021, causing prices to rise.
Zangge Mining is the largest potash producer in China, producing around 2 million tons of potassium chloride annually.

Uralkali will supply potassium chloride at a price of USD 422 per ton to Indian Potash Limited. The contract has been signed by Uralkali in April 2023 and it is valid till 30th September 2023, with price discount of 28%.
In March 2022, Nutrien announced its plans to boost its potash production by 1 million tons to reach 15 million tons annually to cater to the growing demand of potash on the back of tension in Eastern Europe amid the Russia-Ukraine war.
